Who We Are

Founded in 1977, the Community Arts Project (CAP) is the second oldest non-governmental art organisation in South Africa, and offers education and training in performing and visual arts.

CAP started as a creative space where artists from different backgrounds could interact and learn from one another.

Over time, CAP has become more concerned with providing education and training for marginalised communities so as to help them access further education, to enter the job market or to create their own jobs in the arts.

Many well-known artist have developed their talents and launched their careers at CAP.They include painters, sculptors, theatre and television actors, art educators, dancers and musicians, like...

  • Nomkitha Bavuma
  • Willie Bester
  • Sipho Hiati
  • David Hlongwane
  • Tina Jaxa
  • Billy Mandindi
  • Mandla Mbothwe
  • Sibongile Mngoma
  • Sophie Peters
  • Theba Shumba
  • Soloman Siko

"Many, many artists came out of CAP - once they have been at CAP they form networks...It opened my eyes cause I was able to meet different people...CAP was my family, the founders have remained my friends.CAP also made me aware of the importance of art, of the importance of creativity."

-Zoe Kata, founding member (1978-9) next
