INDIGENOUS MEDICINAL PLANT PROJECT

The museum has been researching and recording the rich oral history of traditonal remedies found in the Montagu district since 1982.  The Khoisan people who lived in this area had an exceptional knowledge of and use for indigenous medicinal plants and herbs. The pioneer farmers who settled in       the district used these traditional remedies as farms were very isolated.            Today these remedies are still in use, but as the older people die valuable information is being lost.

Most of the plants researched by the museum can be seen in the indigenous medicinal plant garden behind  Joubert House.  The museum publication:
Herbal Remedies of Montagu Museum is for sale at both museums.
