Victorian House

The reconstructed Late-Victorian House and Garden depict life in the four towns two decades after the discovery of gold. As the mines developed and prospered, other businesses multiplied and were soon followed by schools, churches, sport- and recreational facilities. Water was obtained from wells, but municipal services soon improved life for the early inhabitants. Horse-drawn carriages were still used extensively as only a handful of people owned motorcars. Picnics at Struben's Valley, Witpoortjie Falls and Florida lake were popular weekend outings, while evenings were mainly spent at home playing board games and singing around the piano.
